CAMP PERRY, Ohio (NWS) -- For the second time in as many years, a Navy marksman has topped a field of the nation's best military and civilian competitors at the National Rifle Championships, held each August at Camp Perry, Ohio.

Lieutenant Commander Wes Shumaker of the Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Pacific, won the Porter Trophy Match, fired with a service rifle at 1,000 yards. After winning his relay, Shumaker, a High Master in High Power Rifle competition, posted a score of 98 out of a possible 100 points in the final "shootoff" among relay winners.

In 1999, first-year team member MM1 Jamie Mordarski of Naval Submarine Support Facility, New London, Conn., won the Farr Trophy Match, another 1,000-yard Service Rifle event held at the Nationals. This year's high Navy competitor in the Farr match was Cmdr. George Rodriguez of the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC), Area 5.

Shumaker also had the highest score among Navy personnel in the grueling, four-day National Service Rifle Championship. JO1 Mark Overstreet of the Joint Forces Command Joint Reserve Unit won the Service Expert Class in the event, while GM1 Richard Killingsworth of Special Boat Unit 12, Coronado, Calif., won in the Service Marksman Class. Both Overstreet and Killingsworth earned their High Power Rifle Master Classifications in the process.

Reflecting the steady growth of the Navy's competitive marksmanship program during the last decade, 50 Navy and Naval Reserve riflemen participated in this year's two-week National Matches after a strenuous competitive schedule in Atlantic Fleet, Pacific Fleet, All Navy, and Interservice Matches earlier in the year.

Intelligence Specialist 3rd Class Michael Caprioli of Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet Intel Det 0194, won the Arleigh Burke Trophy for the highest combined score among Navy personnel in the National Trophy Individual (NTI) and National Trophy Team rifle matches. For his Gold Badge-winning score in the NTI, Caprioli also won the Wyatt Trophy for the highest score among Navy personnel and the Police Rifle Trophy for the highest scoring policeman. In civilian life, Caprioli is a Deputy Sheriff with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Also in the NTI, Lt. Cmdr. Ted Janacek of the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Conn., and Overstreet earned Silver Badges, while AW2 Tibor Szivos of Patrol Squadron (VP) 66 at NAS Willow Grove, Pa.; CWO4 Don Gussler of Special Boat Unit 12, Coronado, Calif., GMG1 Kurt Derwort of SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 2, NAB Little Creek, Va.; BU2 Don Stonier of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 7, Det 107 Horseheads, N.Y.; and ATC Michael Evert of VP-59 in Ft. Worth, Texas, all earned Bronze Badges.

The Navy's competitive marksmanship program trains Sailors in small arms marksmanship and safety, qualifies Sailors to stand armed watches, develops and tests small arms training techniques, and validates improvements in small arms technology developed by Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division.
